Cadiz, Spain (4/18/2018)

Cadiz, the city, is the capital of the Province of Cadiz (compare this to a county in the U.S.) It is in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, Spain (similar powers as one of our states.) With a population of 123,948 in 2012, it is ranked only 50th in Spain. Cadiz has been losing population over the past 20+ years as the city is built on a narror penensular that is surrounded by water; thus there is no room to grow. Because of the sandy soil, it is too expensive to dig a foundation deep enough to support high-rise buildings. You will find that the skyline isn't much different than it was in medieval times.

This will be our first visit to Cadiz; thus, I had to learn about its long history. I was surpised to learn that Cadiz is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, being founded as a trading post in 1100 BC by the Phoencians. Being one of Europe's oldest cities, Cadiz is a maze of pedestrian streets, squares and Moorish architecture. It could be a fun port to do on your own, or you can take an excursion to Seville to see Seville's Gothic Cathedral, the largest in the world and pictured below.

Cruise ships dock in the center of town alongside Alfonso XIII pier, from which the town is easily covered by foot. A tourist information center is on Plaza de San Juan de Dios, just accross Avenida del Puerto from the cruise terminal.
